A woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicting travellers caught in a rainstorm along the historic Kisokaido route.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a scene from the Kisokaido, one of the major routes connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. The composition captures travellers navigating a heavy rainstorm near the post station of Hiratsuka. Eisen employs diagonal lines across the upper portion of the print to represent the driving rain, a technique that creates a sense of movement and atmospheric pressure.
In the foreground, two pack horses laden with blue-wrapped cargo are led by figures wearing traditional straw hats and rain capes. The muted colour palette, dominated by shades of grey, blue, and earthy browns, reflects the sombre mood of the weather. The trees, bent by the wind, further communicate the harsh conditions of the journey. The print is part of the series 'Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido', a collaborative project between Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige.
Eisen was a prolific artist of the late Edo period, known for his work in various genres, including bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and landscape prints. His contribution to the Kisokaido series demonstrates his ability to convey the specific character of the Japanese countryside. The print maintains a balance between the human element of the travellers and the natural environment, documenting the realities of travel along the historic route. The use of woodblock printing allows for the subtle gradation of colour in the sky and the sharp definition of the rain, showcasing the technical skill involved in the production of these ukiyo-e works.
