A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, depicting a woman in a patterned kimono at the Hiratsuka post station.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a scene from the series 'The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaidō'. The composition focuses on a woman in the foreground, dressed in a patterned blue kimono, who stands as the primary subject against a backdrop of the Hiratsuka post station. Eisen, a prolific artist of the late Edo period, was known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, and his ability to integrate human figures with travel motifs.
The woman holds a pipe, her posture relaxed yet poised. Her kimono features a bold, repeating leaf pattern, rendered in shades of indigo and white. The background provides a sense of place, showing the typical activity of a busy road station, including travellers carried in palanquins and the sparse, windswept trees characteristic of the Kiso Kaidō route. The print employs the flat perspective and strong outlines common to the Ukiyo-e tradition, where colour blocks are used to define form and texture rather than modelling through light and shadow.
Eisen's work on this series was a collaborative effort with Utagawa Hiroshige, though Eisen's contributions are distinct for their emphasis on the figures rather than the topography alone. The print captures a moment of pause in the journey, reflecting the transient nature of life on the road during the nineteenth century. The colour palette remains balanced, relying on the contrast between the deep blue of the garments and the muted, earthy tones of the landscape. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the era, where fashion and travel were frequent subjects for the urban print-buying public in Edo.
