A striking woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VII in a dramatic Kabuki role, featuring bold makeup and expressive lines.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada captures the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VII in the role of Kan Shojo, a character from the play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami. The scene depicts the moment of transformation at Mt. Tenpai, where the protagonist, having been exiled, manifests his vengeful spirit. Kunisada employs the dramatic kumadori makeup style, using bold red lines against a pale face to convey intense emotion and supernatural power. The actor's hair is depicted in a wild, flowing manner, suggesting a state of agitation or spiritual possession.
In his mouth, the figure holds a sprig of plum blossoms, a reference to the character's deep attachment to the tree he left behind in Kyoto. The composition focuses on the upper torso and head, allowing for a clear view of the expressive facial features and the stylised patterns on the costume. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the black ink of the hair and robes, the stark white of the skin, and the sharp red of the makeup.
Kunisada was a prolific designer of actor prints, and this work demonstrates his ability to translate the energy of the Kabuki stage into the two-dimensional medium of the woodblock. The print serves as a record of a specific performance style, documenting the physical presence and costume details of a celebrated actor of the Edo period. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical skill of the carvers who worked alongside the artist to produce these popular images for the public. This print offers a view into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where theatre and printmaking were closely linked.
