Gaspard Dughet, a pupil and brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, was a central figure in the development of the idealised classical view during the seventeenth century. The scene is constructed with a deliberate sense of order, guiding the viewer from the shaded, rocky banks of the foreground toward the illuminated, distant mountains.
