A tranquil watercolour by Eric Ravilious, depicting the interior of a cottage at Furlongs with a view towards the South Downs.
Eric Ravilious produced this watercolour during his frequent stays at Furlongs, a cottage on the South Downs belonging to his friend Peggy Angus. The work captures a quiet, domestic scene, characterised by the artist's distinctive use of texture and light. Ravilious employed a dry-brush technique to build up the walls, creating a cross-hatched effect that suggests the rough plaster of the cottage interior. This method provides a tactile quality to the surface, contrasting with the smooth, open doorway that leads the eye towards the rolling Sussex countryside beyond.
The composition is structured around the interplay between the interior space and the external view. A simple wooden chair sits in the foreground, casting a distinct shadow against the wall, which anchors the scene. The window, framed by modest curtains, acts as a secondary frame for the fields outside. Ravilious avoids excessive detail, preferring to focus on the geometry of the room and the quality of the light as it enters from the open door and the window. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted blues, greys, and earthy tones to convey the atmosphere of the rural retreat.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between man-made structures and the natural environment. By depicting the cottage from within, Ravilious invites the viewer into a private, tranquil space. The work demonstrates his technical precision and his ability to transform a mundane subject into a considered study of form and perspective. It remains a representative example of his work in the late 1930s, a period when he produced some of his most recognised watercolours of the English countryside and its vernacular architecture.
