A detailed eighteenth-century copperplate engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth, depicting the clergyman Johann Günther in his official robes.
This copperplate engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth depicts Johann Günther, an Archidiaconus at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Bernigeroth, a prolific engraver based in Leipzig, was known for his technical precision in portraiture, often documenting the clergy and academic figures of the mid-eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of the period: the subject is presented in a three-quarter view, wearing the traditional clerical robes and a ruff collar, which denote his ecclesiastical status. His hand rests upon a small book, a common iconographic element used to signify scholarship and theological devotion.
The background features a glimpse into the interior of a church, rendered with architectural perspective that provides a sense of depth behind the figure. A heavy curtain hangs to the left, adding a theatrical quality to the portrait. The lower portion of the print includes an elaborate cartouche containing the subject's name, title, and a German verse. The text serves to identify the sitter and provide a moralising context for the viewer.
Bernigeroth’s line work is controlled and methodical, utilising cross-hatching to create shadows within the folds of the fabric and the architectural recesses. This technique allows for a subtle range of grey tones, typical of the high-quality printmaking produced in Leipzig during this era. The work is a fine example of the portrait engraving tradition, where the focus remains on the dignity and professional identity of the sitter. The print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the German Lutheran church during the eighteenth century, capturing the formal aesthetic expected of such commemorative portraits.
