A dramatic Neoclassical aquatint by Maria Catharina Prestel depicting the biblical encounter between Joseph and Potiphar's wife.
This work by Maria Catharina Prestel depicts the biblical narrative of Joseph fleeing from the advances of Potiphar's wife. Prestel, a skilled printmaker active in the late eighteenth century, utilised the aquatint medium to achieve the tonal depth and wash-like effects visible here. The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical history painting, focusing on the dramatic tension between the two figures. Joseph is shown in a state of urgent retreat, his posture conveying a sense of moral resolve, while Potiphar's wife is positioned on a couch, her gesture capturing the moment of confrontation.
The architectural setting, featuring a classical pedestal and draped fabric, provides a structured backdrop that directs the viewer's eye across the scene. Prestel's technical proficiency is evident in the handling of light and shadow, which creates a sense of volume within the figures and the surrounding space. The inclusion of a small dog in the foreground adds a domestic detail to the otherwise theatrical encounter.
Prestel was known for her ability to translate drawings and paintings into print, often working in collaboration with her husband, Johann Gottlieb Prestel. Her work reflects the period's interest in reproducing Old Master compositions for a wider audience. This print demonstrates her command of the aquatint process, allowing for subtle gradations of sepia and brown tones that mimic the appearance of a wash drawing. The work remains a representative example of the printmaking techniques employed during the late eighteenth century to disseminate classical and biblical themes.
