A haunting Symbolist work by Wilhelm Kotarbinski, depicting the mythological encounter between Medusa and a victim through dramatic chiaroscuro.
Wilhelm Kotarbinski, a Polish painter who spent much of his career in Kyiv, produced works heavily influenced by the Symbolist movement. His output often explored themes of mythology, death, and the supernatural. In this composition, the artist depicts the Gorgon Medusa in a moment of intimate, fatal contact with a victim. The work relies on high-contrast chiaroscuro to define the figures against a dark, atmospheric background.
Medusa is presented with a haunting gaze, her hair rendered as a mass of serpentine forms that merge with the shadows. The male figure is captured in a state of surrender, his form partially obscured by the encroaching darkness that defines the edges of the frame. Kotarbinski uses a monochromatic palette to focus the viewer on the tension between the two figures. The brushwork is expressive, creating a sense of movement within the hair and the surrounding gloom.
This piece reflects the late nineteenth-century fascination with the femme fatale archetype, a common subject in European art of the period. By stripping away colour, the artist emphasises the psychological weight of the encounter. The composition avoids traditional narrative clarity, opting instead for a dreamlike, unsettling atmosphere. The inclusion of the Cyrillic title at the base of the original work indicates its circulation within the Russian Empire, where Kotarbinski enjoyed significant popularity during his lifetime. This print captures the stark tonal range of the original, preserving the dramatic interplay of light and shadow that defines the artist's approach to mythological subjects.
