An atmospheric etching by Marius Bauer depicting a coppersmith and his assistant at work in a Constantinople workshop.
Marius Bauer was a Dutch artist who travelled extensively throughout the Middle East and India. His work reflects a fascination with the daily life and atmosphere of these regions. This etching, titled Koperslager in Constantinopel, captures a quiet moment within a workshop. Two figures are depicted: an older man, likely the master craftsman, and a younger assistant. They are focused on the metalwork resting between them.
Bauer uses a distinct etching technique, employing quick, nervous lines to build form and shadow. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, hatched areas of the workshop interior and the lighter, more open space where the figures are positioned. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest the texture of the metal and the folds of the clothing through rhythmic mark-making. The scene is intimate, focusing on the concentration of the workers rather than the broader architecture of the city.
This print demonstrates Bauer's ability to convey a sense of place through light and shadow. The figures are rendered with a degree of naturalism that avoids caricature, presenting a respectful observation of traditional craft. The background is suggested with minimal strokes, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two men and their work. As an etcher, Bauer was highly regarded for his ability to capture the fleeting quality of light in his scenes, a skill that is evident in the way the workshop interior is defined. The work remains a representative example of his output during his travels, showing his interest in the human element of the regions he visited.
