A 1688 woodblock print from a Japanese pattern book featuring delicate bellflower and flowing water motifs for kimono design.
This woodblock print originates from the 1688 publication Hiinagata Miyako no Fuji, a collection of pattern designs for kosode, the precursor to the modern kimono. Omiya Sōshichi produced this volume during the Genroku era, a period marked by the rise of merchant culture and a demand for fashionable garments among the urban population of Kyoto and Edo.
The page displays two distinct motifs intended for textile decoration. On the left, the artist depicts bellflowers (kikyo) with delicate stems and leaves, arranged in a naturalistic yet stylised manner suitable for silk embroidery or dyeing. The right side features a flowing water motif, a common theme in Japanese decorative arts that suggests movement and seasonal change. The lines are clean and precise, reflecting the technical requirements of woodblock carving for pattern books.
These pattern books functioned as catalogues for tailors and their clients. They provided a visual vocabulary for garment decoration, allowing for the selection of motifs that could be adapted to various silk fabrics. The composition is divided into rectangular panels, a standard layout for such manuals, which allowed the user to view multiple design options simultaneously. The work provides insight into the aesthetic preferences of the late seventeenth century, where nature-inspired imagery dominated the visual culture of the merchant class. By focusing on the essential forms of flora and water, the artist created designs that were both functional for the artisan and visually appealing to the consumer. This print captures the intersection of commercial fashion and traditional Japanese design, documenting the methods by which style was disseminated across the archipelago during the Edo period.
