A pastoral scene by Dutch Golden Age painter Willem Romeyn, depicting a herd of cattle and goats resting by a riverbank beneath rocky cliffs.
Willem Romeyn, a painter active in Haarlem during the seventeenth century, produced this work in the tradition of the Italianate Dutch painters. These artists often travelled to Italy, returning with sketches of the Mediterranean light and rugged topography, which they integrated into their compositions. This painting depicts a herd of cattle and goats gathered at a riverbank, set against a backdrop of steep, rocky cliffs and a distant structure. The scene captures the quietude of rural life, a common subject for Romeyn, who frequently focused on animal studies within atmospheric settings.
The composition is structured around the contrast between the foreground animals and the imposing verticality of the cliff face on the right. Romeyn employs a muted, earthy palette, characteristic of his period, to render the textures of the animals and the weathered stone. The light appears soft and diffuse, suggesting a late afternoon sun that casts long, gentle shadows across the riverbank. The inclusion of a small figure on a donkey near the base of the cliff adds a sense of scale and narrative detail, typical of the period's interest in human presence within the natural world.
Romeyn was a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem, and his influence is visible in the careful observation of the livestock and the balanced arrangement of the scene. The painting avoids excessive drama, opting instead for a measured, observational approach to the pastoral environment. The brushwork remains controlled, allowing for the clear definition of the animals' forms while maintaining a cohesive, unified atmosphere across the canvas. This piece provides a clear example of the Dutch Golden Age interest in the intersection of domestic agriculture and the imagined, idealised geography of the Italian countryside.
