Description
Jacques Villon's 1957 painting 'La Lutte' depicts a wrestling match in a Cubist style, using fragmented geometric forms and a dynamic palette of blues, greens, yellows, and reds to convey movement and tension.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also known for his printmaking. His brothers Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp were also artists. Villon explored Cubism, developing a style that combined geometric forms with a concern for light and colour. He was associated with the Section d'Or group, which sought to apply mathematical principles to art. 'La Lutte' ('The Struggle') from 1957 presents a dynamic composition of two figures engaged in a wrestling match. The figures are rendered in a fragmented, geometric style, typical of Villon's Cubist approach. The bodies are deconstructed into planes and angles, with a palette of blues, greens, yellows, and reds. These colours create a sense of movement and tension. The background is a solid red, which contrasts with the figures and enhances their presence. The painting captures the energy and physicality of the wrestling match, while also exploring the formal possibilities of Cubist abstraction.
