Description
Lancaster Canal crosses high above blue river water on pale stone arches, its twin balustrades stretching diagonally past leafy banks towards low industrial roofs under a broad clouded sky.
The Lune Aqueduct carries this waterway sixteen metres above the River Lune in Lancashire. Designed by John Rennie, it was constructed by Alexander Stevens in 1797. Its five semicircular arches form a crossing 202 metres long, protected as a Grade I listed structure.
Two narrow lines of stone balustrades trace the Lancaster Canal across the middle of the view. The pale masonry arches cast dark curves onto the water, with deeper shade beneath each vault. Trees crowd the near bank at lower left. Across the river, low industrial roofs sit among foliage, their small rectangular shapes contrasting with the repeated rounded openings of the aqueduct.
