Jan van Scorel, a central figure in the introduction of Italian Renaissance aesthetics to the Netherlands, produced this work during his mature period. The painting depicts the biblical narrative of Bathsheba at her bath, observed by King David from a distance. Van Scorel integrates the human figures into a vast, panoramic setting that reflects his travels through Italy and the Holy Land. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the foreground features the nude Bathsheba and her attendants, while the middle ground transitions into a complex architectural arrangement of classical structures.

The background reveals a craggy, mountainous horizon that demonstrates the artist's interest in geological forms and atmospheric perspective. The architecture, which includes a domed structure and a colonnaded palace, suggests an idealised vision of Jerusalem, filtered through the lens of sixteenth-century European classicism. Van Scorel employs a balanced palette, using cool blues for the distant peaks and warmer, earthy tones for the foliage and stone elements.
