A pastoral scene by Thomas Gainsborough, this etching and aquatint depicts a horse-drawn cart in a rural setting. The soft, atmospheric quality is characteristic of Gainsborough's landscape style.
This etching and aquatint by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) presents a pastoral scene typical of his landscape work. Gainsborough, a British painter known primarily for his portraiture, also produced a number of landscape paintings and prints throughout his career. This work, created in 1782, shows a rural setting with a horse-drawn cart carrying figures along a path. The composition is dominated by trees and sky, with the figures and cart providing a focal point. The printmaking techniques used give the image a soft, atmospheric quality, characteristic of Gainsborough's style. The scene evokes a sense of tranquility and the beauty of the English countryside. The print was published 'as the Act directs August 1782 by J. & J. Boydell No. 90 Cheapside & at the Shakespeare Gallery Pall Mall'.
