Domenichino, born Domenico Zampieri, was a central figure in the Bolognese school of painting. This work represents the idealised classical style that defined his approach to the genre. The composition is structured around a clear recession of planes, moving from the foreground figures to the middle ground of the river and cattle, and finally to the imposing, craggy rock formation that dominates the background.

The narrative subject is drawn from Roman mythology, specifically the account of Hercules defeating the thief Cacus. Despite the dramatic nature of the myth, the figures are secondary to the overall atmospheric construction of the scene. Domenichino employs a balanced, orderly arrangement of natural elements, reflecting the influence of Annibale Carracci.
