A circular etching by Jean Morin depicting travellers in a rural setting, rendered with fine detail and atmospheric depth.
This circular etching by Jean Morin captures a quiet moment of travel within a rural setting. Morin, a French printmaker active during the seventeenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied line weights to define the textures of the foliage, the distant rolling hills, and the figures on horseback. The composition is framed within a tondo, a format that directs the viewer's gaze toward the central river winding through the valley.
The foreground features a large, leafy tree that provides a natural canopy for the two travellers. Their presence adds a sense of scale to the expansive view beyond. Morin employs cross-hatching and fine parallel lines to create depth, allowing the eye to travel from the shaded foreground into the sunlit, atmospheric distance. The sky is rendered with horizontal strokes, suggesting the soft clouds of a late afternoon.
Morin was known for his portraiture and his ability to translate the qualities of painting into the medium of print. In this work, he applies similar attention to light and shadow, creating a balanced scene that avoids unnecessary clutter. The inscription in the lower right corner, 'Morin fe. et Ex. Cum Priuil. Re.', indicates that the artist both executed the plate and held the royal privilege for its publication. This print reflects the seventeenth-century interest in topographical and pastoral subjects, where the natural world is presented with both precision and a sense of calm. The work remains a fine example of the period's mastery of the etching needle, showing how a monochromatic palette can convey a wide range of atmospheric conditions and spatial depth.
