A detailed 1775 etching by Carl Wilhelm Weisbrod after Jan Wijnants, depicting two horsemen on a rural path.
This etching by Carl Wilhelm Weisbrod, produced in 1775, reproduces a painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Jan Wijnants. The work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of eighteenth-century reproductive printmaking. Weisbrod, a German engraver active in Paris, collaborated with the printmaker Le Bas to translate the atmospheric qualities of Wijnants' original composition into the medium of line engraving and etching. The scene depicts a rural track winding through an open, undulating terrain. Two horsemen occupy the foreground, their figures rendered with careful attention to movement and costume. To the left, a cluster of trees provides a vertical counterpoint to the low-lying hills that stretch toward the horizon. The sky is filled with voluminous, rolling clouds, a common motif in Dutch seventeenth-century art, which Weisbrod captures through varied hatching and stippling techniques. The composition follows the conventions of the period, using a clear foreground, middle ground, and distant vista to create a sense of spatial depth. Below the image, the print includes traditional cartouche-style lettering and a coat of arms, identifying the work as part of the collection of Monsieur Le Brun. This inclusion of provenance information was standard for high-quality prints intended for the connoisseur market in Paris during the late eighteenth century. The print serves as a record of the original painting, which was highly regarded for its naturalistic observation of rural life. The work reflects the period's interest in the systematic cataloguing of private collections through the medium of fine art prints. The balance between the detailed foreground and the atmospheric treatment of the distance illustrates the sophisticated graphic language employed by Weisbrod to replicate the tonal range of oil painting.
