Robert Julian Onderdonk, often recognised as the father of Texas painting, focused his career on capturing the specific light and flora of the Texas Hill Country. This work depicts a field of bluebonnets, the state flower, set against a backdrop of dormant trees. The composition relies on the contrast between the cool, saturated blue of the flowers and the muted, earthy tones of the brush and sky.

Onderdonk studied under William Merritt Chase in New York, an experience that informed his application of paint.
