A refined 1741 engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicting Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester, presented in a formal oval frame with decorative cartouche.
This engraving by the Dutch master Jacobus Houbraken depicts Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester. Produced in 1741, the work is a fine example of the technical precision associated with Houbraken, who gained recognition for his contributions to Thomas Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'.
The portrait captures Hyde within a classic oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century commemorative prints. The subject is shown in three-quarter view, wearing the elaborate periwig and lace cravat characteristic of the late seventeenth-century English aristocracy. The artist employs a variety of line weights to differentiate textures, from the soft curls of the wig to the crisp, geometric patterns of the lace and the heavy folds of the robes.
Below the portrait, the composition features a decorative cartouche, a hallmark of Houbraken's style. This architectural element provides a sense of weight and formality to the print. The cross-hatching and stippling techniques demonstrate the artist's ability to create depth and volume through monochromatic means. Houbraken's work remains a primary source for the visual history of the period, as he often worked from existing oil paintings to create these refined engravings. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition reflect the disciplined approach of a printmaker who spent his career perfecting the art of the portrait engraving. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the mid-eighteenth century, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting political and social status.
