A satirical 1842 lithograph by Honoré-Victorin Daumier from the Monomanes series, depicting a man obsessed with his pet bird.
This lithograph is part of the series titled Monomanes, published in the French satirical journal Le Charivari in 1842. Honoré-Victorin Daumier, a master of social commentary, depicts a man obsessed with his collection of animals. The subject is shown in profile, wearing a dressing gown and a nightcap, holding a birdcage with a focused, almost manic expression. His exaggerated features, particularly the nose and the curve of his posture, are characteristic of Daumier's approach to character study.
Daumier uses lithography to capture the texture of the fabric and the subtle shading of the figure. The composition is clean, placing the subject against a plain background to ensure the viewer focuses on the interaction between the man and his pet. The text below the image translates to: The supreme happiness of the animal lover is to make at home a little menagerie of his own in which to pass his life. One can apply to him with truth the proverb: Tell me who you frequent, and I will tell you who you are.
This work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in phrenology and the classification of human personality types. Daumier often used these pseudo-scientific concepts to mock the social habits of the Parisian bourgeoisie. By framing the collector as a monomaniac, he suggests that such singular obsessions are both ridiculous and revealing. The print serves as an example of how Daumier combined technical skill with sharp wit to critique the social norms of his time. It remains a clear look at the artist's ability to condense complex human behaviours into a single, memorable image.
