A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a monk with a fish and a swan, accompanied by a French verse mocking monastic indulgence.
This mezzotint by Jacob Gole, titled Le Delicat, presents a satirical take on monastic life during the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. The circular composition focuses on a monk who holds a fish near his ear, while a swan appears to whisper or interact with him. The imagery plays upon contemporary tropes regarding the perceived gluttony or hypocrisy of religious orders, contrasting their vows of poverty with the reality of their diet.
The technical execution demonstrates Gole's mastery of the mezzotint process. By using a rocker to create a burr on the copper plate, he achieves a range of soft, velvety tones that define the monk's facial features and the textures of the animals. The light source is carefully managed to create a sense of volume, particularly in the monk's expressive, slightly grotesque features.
Below the image, the French text provides a humorous commentary on the subject. It suggests that while the public believes these men live in hardship, they actually enjoy a diet of shellfish, fine fish, and other delicacies. The verse claims that no group is happier than theirs, effectively mocking the disconnect between public perception and private indulgence.
Jacob Gole was a prolific Dutch engraver and print publisher based in Amsterdam. He is known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the medium of print. This work is part of a series that explores character types and social commentary through a lens of dark humour. The print remains a clear example of how printmakers of the period used visual satire to engage with social and religious themes, providing a window into the cultural attitudes of the Dutch Republic.
