Sanford Robinson Gifford, a central figure of the second generation of the Hudson River School, travelled extensively through Europe and the Near East during the 1860s and 1870s. This work captures the Maiden's Tower, historically known as Leander's Tower, situated on a small islet in the Bosporus Strait near Istanbul. Gifford employs the characteristic techniques of Luminism, a style defined by the concealment of brushstrokes and a preoccupation with the effects of light on water and atmosphere.
