An allegorical study by Pieter van den Berge depicting a figure in physical distress, rendered in ink and watercolour.
This work by Pieter van den Berge, titled Lichaamssmart, translates to Bodily Pain. It serves as a visual representation of physical suffering, a common theme in allegorical works of the period. The figure is depicted in a state of distress, clutching their chest while wearing loose, informal garments. The posture suggests sudden agony or internal discomfort, captured with expressive lines and a restrained colour palette.
The artist employs a combination of ink outlines and watercolour washes to define the form. The background remains minimal, featuring soft, green-toned foliage that provides a neutral setting for the central figure. The inscription at the top, Doulour Corporilli, confirms the allegorical intent of the piece, categorising the image within the tradition of medical or moralising illustrations common in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Van den Berge, active in the Netherlands, produced various prints and drawings that often explored human emotion and physical states. This particular study demonstrates his ability to convey narrative through gesture and facial expression. The composition is balanced, focusing entirely on the subject's reaction to their condition. The use of light washes allows the paper texture to remain visible, adding a sense of immediacy to the sketch. This print offers a glimpse into the historical approach to depicting human vulnerability and the physical manifestations of pain in early modern art. It is a piece that invites observation of the artist's technique in combining anatomical suggestion with emotive storytelling.
