A formal 1789 engraving by John Hall depicting Lieutenant General Sir Robert Boyd in profile, presented within a decorative oval frame.
This engraving by John Hall depicts Lieutenant General Sir Robert Boyd, who served as the Lieutenant Governor of Gibraltar. The work is based on a drawing by William Bigg and was published in London in 1789. Hall, a skilled engraver who held the title of Historical Engraver to King George III, demonstrates technical precision in his rendering of the subject's military uniform and the textures of his attire.
The portrait is presented within a trompe l'oeil oval frame, a common convention in eighteenth-century printmaking that provides a sense of depth and formality. Sir Robert Boyd is shown in profile, facing left, wearing his military regalia, including the star of the Order of the Bath. The composition is balanced by a pedestal at the base, which features an inscribed plaque and the coat of arms of the subject, complete with decorative flourishes and palm fronds. The background of the oval is filled with fine, horizontal cross-hatching, which creates a subtle contrast against the figure.
John Hall was known for his ability to translate the nuances of oil paintings and drawings into the medium of line engraving. His work on this portrait captures the dignity and status expected of a high-ranking military official of the period. The clean lines and controlled shading reflect the disciplined aesthetic of late eighteenth-century British print culture. This piece offers a clear window into the visual language of the era, where portraiture functioned as a means of recording the appearance and achievements of public figures. The print remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of eighteenth-century art, involving the original draughtsman, the engraver, and the publisher to produce a finished work for a wider audience.
