A striking 1960 lithograph by Pablo Picasso, featuring a girl with a hoop rendered in the artist's signature late-period cubist style.
This lithograph, titled Little Girl with Hoop, demonstrates the late-career approach of Pablo Picasso to the human figure. Executed in 1960, the work reflects the artist's ongoing engagement with synthetic cubist principles, where form is reduced to essential geometric planes and bold, graphic outlines. The subject is depicted through a series of flattened, interlocking shapes that suggest both the figure and the object she holds.
The composition relies on a controlled palette of muted greens, ochre, grey, and black. Picasso uses these colours to define the spatial relationship between the girl and her immediate environment. The hoop is rendered as a sweeping, curved line that cuts across the verticality of the figure's dress, providing a necessary visual counterpoint to the rigid, angular structure of the body. The face is presented in a characteristic profile-frontal hybrid, a technique Picasso refined over decades to capture multiple perspectives simultaneously.
Unlike his earlier, more fragmented cubist experiments, this work displays a clarity of line and a deliberate economy of detail. The background is minimal, focusing the viewer's attention on the interplay of the girl's posture and the circular form of the hoop. The print captures the graphic quality of Picasso's later graphic work, where the artist sought to distil complex subjects into their most recognisable visual components. The work is signed in the plate, consistent with his limited edition lithographic output from this period. It offers a clear example of how the artist continued to manipulate traditional portraiture through his own visual language, prioritising the arrangement of shapes and the balance of flat colour fields over realistic representation.
