A refined 1823 portrait by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, capturing Françoise Poncelle in a black gown with a patterned shawl.
Painted in 1823, this portrait of Françoise Poncelle, Madame Jacques-Louis Leblanc, represents the precision and technical control characteristic of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. The artist spent significant time in Florence during this period, where he produced this work alongside a companion portrait of her husband. Ingres focuses on the clarity of form, using smooth brushwork to define the textures of the subject's attire and the subtle modelling of her features.
Madame Leblanc is depicted seated, her posture relaxed yet composed. She wears a black dress that contrasts with the colourful, patterned shawl draped across her lap. The shawl, with its floral motifs and stripes, provides a visual counterpoint to the dark, muted background. Ingres pays close attention to the details of her jewellery, including the long gold chain that rests against the bodice of her gown. Her expression is calm, directed towards the viewer with a steady gaze.
The composition is balanced, with the subject positioned slightly to the left, allowing space for the small table and floral arrangement on the right side of the frame. The lighting is controlled, illuminating the subject's face and hands while allowing the darker elements of the dress and background to recede. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the likeness of his sitter while maintaining a formal, ordered aesthetic. The painting is part of a series of portraits commissioned by the Leblanc family, reflecting the status of the Parisian bourgeoisie during the early nineteenth century. Through his meticulous approach, Ingres creates a record of the subject's appearance, dress, and social standing, presented with the discipline of the Neoclassical tradition.
