A seminal 1910 etching by Pablo Picasso, demonstrating the fragmented planes and geometric rigour of Analytic Cubism.
This etching, created by Pablo Picasso in 1910, represents a specific phase in the development of Analytic Cubism. During this period, Picasso and Georges Braque systematically dismantled the traditional representation of three-dimensional space, opting instead to fracture the subject into a series of overlapping planes and geometric facets. In this work, the figure of Mademoiselle Léonie is not rendered through conventional modelling or perspective. Rather, the artist employs a network of lines and hatching to suggest the presence of the sitter within the chair, allowing the viewer to perceive the form through a process of visual reconstruction.
The composition is characterised by a monochromatic palette, which was common in Picasso's prints from this era. By stripping away colour, the artist focuses entirely on the structural integrity of the image. The lines vary in weight, with dense cross-hatching providing shadow and volume, while thinner, more tentative marks define the edges of the chair and the figure's posture. The background merges with the foreground, creating a shallow, compressed space that denies the viewer a traditional sense of depth.
This print is an example of the rigorous experimentation Picasso applied to the medium of etching. He uses the copper plate to explore how light and form might be translated into a language of signs and symbols. The result is an image that requires active engagement, as the eye moves across the fragmented surfaces to assemble the portrait. It remains a clear demonstration of the artist's ability to push the boundaries of representation, moving away from the descriptive towards a more conceptual understanding of the subject. The work is part of a broader series of investigations into the human figure that defined Picasso's output during his time in Paris.
