A detailed 19th-century etching of a traditional Swiss cheese store in the Lauterbrunnen valley, featuring precise line work and alpine scenery.
This etching depicts a traditional Swiss cheese store, or 'Speicher', situated in the Lauterbrunnen valley. The structure is raised on stone pillars, a common architectural feature designed to protect dairy stores from rodents and damp ground. The artist, P. Ellmer, captures the rustic texture of the log construction with precise, controlled lines. To the left, a large, leafy tree provides a dense canopy, contrasting with the stark, vertical rock face and the faint suggestion of a waterfall in the background.
The print reflects the 18th and 19th-century European interest in documenting regional architecture and the dramatic geography of the Alps. The composition balances the heavy, grounded form of the wooden store against the expansive, vertical nature of the mountain setting. The inclusion of the title in French, 'Magasin de fromage à Lauterbrunnen', and the numbering 'No. CXIII' suggest this work was part of a larger topographical series or travel portfolio intended for a European audience interested in the picturesque qualities of Switzerland.
Technically, the work relies on varied hatching and cross-hatching to define shadow and depth. The foliage is rendered with a repetitive, rhythmic stroke that creates a sense of volume without relying on tonal washes. The foreground remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the architectural details of the store and the immediate natural environment. This piece offers a clear view of historical agricultural life in the Bernese Oberland, presented with the clarity and observational rigour typical of period travel documentation.
