A woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicting two mallards in flight over snow-covered reeds. This work exemplifies the Shin-Hanga movement's blend of naturalism and decorative design.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his woodblock prints of birds and flowers. Active during the Shin-Hanga movement, which revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e techniques, Koson's work blends naturalistic observation with decorative design. He initially trained in painting but transitioned to printmaking, collaborating with publishers to reach international audiences. His prints were particularly popular in Europe and America, contributing to the Western appreciation of Japanese art. In "Mallards", Koson depicts two ducks in flight above snow-covered reeds. The composition is simple yet elegant, with the birds rendered in meticulous detail. The muted colour palette, dominated by greys and browns, evokes a serene winter atmosphere. The artist's careful attention to the ducks' plumage and posture demonstrates his skill in capturing the essence of nature. The print exemplifies the Shin-Hanga movement's emphasis on realism and refined craftsmanship, while also reflecting the traditional Japanese appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.
