A raw, expressive ink drawing by Dutch artist Lucebert, featuring a stylized human figure and bird rendered with spontaneous, fluid lines.
Lucebert, the pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, remains a central figure in post-war Dutch art. As a poet and painter, his work often bridges the gap between linguistic expression and visual form. This piece, dated 1970, captures his characteristic approach to figuration, which avoids traditional realism in favour of raw, spontaneous mark-making. The composition features a distorted human figure positioned below a simplified, almost childlike depiction of a bird.
The ink lines are fluid and direct, demonstrating the artist's preference for immediacy over technical polish. The wash elements provide a sense of atmosphere and depth, contrasting with the starkness of the contour lines. This work reflects the aesthetic principles of the CoBrA movement, which sought to liberate art from academic constraints by embracing primitive forms and uninhibited creativity. Lucebert often explored themes of human vulnerability and existential absurdity, and the interaction between the man and the bird here suggests a quiet, perhaps melancholic, connection between the two subjects.
By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist focuses on the essential gesture of the drawing. The figure's expression is ambiguous, rendered with minimal strokes that convey a sense of introspection. The bird, floating above, acts as a counterpoint to the grounded, heavy form of the man. This print preserves the texture of the original ink application, allowing the viewer to observe the variations in line weight and the transparency of the wash. It is a clear example of the artist's ability to communicate complex emotional states through a deceptively simple visual vocabulary. The work remains a representative sample of his late-career style, where his mastery of line had become both economical and highly expressive.
