Description
A mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant shows a man in period costume lighting his pipe. The work demonstrates Vaillant's mastery of the mezzotint technique, with rich tonal gradations and subtle effects of light and shadow.
This mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant depicts a man in period costume lighting a long-stemmed pipe. Vaillant, a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker, was one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, and this work demonstrates his mastery of the medium. Mezzotint, which involves roughening the plate to create a dark tone, allows for rich tonal gradations and subtle effects of light and shadow. The man is seated on a simple wooden stool, his figure illuminated against a dark background. He wears a cap with a feather and a belted tunic. A jug sits on the floor beside him, and a shelf with various objects is visible in the background. Smoke rises from the pipe, adding to the atmospheric quality of the print. The composition is simple and direct, focusing attention on the man's activity and expression. Vaillant's skill in mezzotint is evident in the smooth transitions and delicate details of the print, which captures a quiet, intimate moment.

Artist Biography
Wallerant Vaillant
He was born in Lille in 1623, the eldest of five brothers who all became painters. He trained under Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and worked as a portraitist in Amsterdam, with extended stays in Paris from 1659 to 1664. He is remembered today primarily as a printmaker rather than a painter. He died in Amsterdam in 1677.
