A detailed etching by Charles-Émile Jacque depicting a melon peddler resting in a rustic interior, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and shadow.
Charles-Émile Jacque was a central figure in the French etching revival of the mid-nineteenth century. This work, titled Man Smoking (Melon Peddler), demonstrates his technical proficiency with the copper plate. The composition depicts a solitary figure resting in a rustic interior, surrounded by the tools and wares of his trade. A shelf above the man holds several melons, while a pitcher and bowl sit on the floor nearby. The scene captures a quiet moment of respite, a common subject for artists associated with the Barbizon School who sought to document the realities of rural life.
Jacque employs a dense network of cross-hatching to define the shadows and textures of the room. The light source, though subtle, creates a sense of volume within the confined space. His approach to the figure is observational, focusing on the posture and attire of the subject rather than idealising the scene. The etching reflects the artist's interest in the everyday activities of common people, a theme he explored throughout his career alongside his better-known depictions of farm animals. The print is characterised by a controlled use of line, which allows for a wide range of tonal values despite the monochrome medium. This piece offers a glimpse into the domestic environments that Jacque frequently visited during his travels through the French countryside. It remains a representative example of his contribution to the graphic arts, showing his ability to imbue a simple genre scene with a sense of atmosphere and physical presence.
