A detailed 1738 engraving by Jacobus Houbraken, depicting Mary, Queen of Scots within an ornate, allegorical frame.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Jacobus Houbraken depicts Mary, Queen of Scots, within an elaborate allegorical frame. Houbraken was a prolific engraver, known for his contributions to Thomas Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain', a collection that documented figures of historical interest. The portrait is based on a painting by Isaac Oliver, which Houbraken adapted into this formal, neoclassical composition.
The central portrait shows the Queen in a high ruff and period attire, framed by an oval border. Below this, a smaller scene depicts her final moments, providing a narrative counterpoint to the static portrait above. The surrounding ornamentation includes a putto, drapery, and an axe, which serves as a symbolic reference to her execution. The technical precision of the engraving is characteristic of Houbraken's style, utilising varied line weights to create texture in the fabric and depth in the architectural elements of the frame.
This work reflects the 18th-century interest in historical portraiture and the dissemination of such images through print media. The inclusion of the inscription 'In the collection of Dr. Mead' identifies the provenance of the original painting used as the source material. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship expected of professional engravers during this period, where the goal was to translate the tonal qualities of oil painting into the linear language of copperplate engraving. It remains a clear example of the intersection between historical documentation and decorative printmaking in the Georgian era.
