A refined nineteenth-century Italian engraving by Ignazio Pavon, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist.
This engraving by Ignazio Pavon, titled Mater Pulchrae Dilectionis, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of nineteenth-century Italian printmaking. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist. Pavon employs a refined burin technique to achieve subtle tonal gradations, creating a sense of volume in the figures against a darkened background. The soft modelling of the skin and the delicate rendering of the drapery reflect the influence of classical painting traditions, which Pavon sought to translate into the medium of the print.
The iconography follows established devotional patterns. The Virgin is shown in a tender, maternal pose, while the infant Saint John leans forward to embrace the Christ Child. The inclusion of a cross staff, partially visible behind the figures, provides a narrative link to the future passion of Christ. The title, translating to Mother of Fair Love, is inscribed clearly beneath the image, a common practice for prints intended for both private devotion and academic study. Pavon, active in Rome during the mid-nineteenth century, was known for his ability to reproduce the nuances of oil paintings through the disciplined application of line and cross-hatching.
In this work, the balance between the figures is carefully maintained. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the anatomical accuracy and the emotional connection between the subjects. The print serves as a record of the period's interest in the reproduction of religious masterworks, allowing such imagery to circulate beyond the confines of churches or private galleries. The clarity of the lines and the controlled contrast between light and shadow ensure that the focus remains on the expressions of the figures, capturing a moment of quiet intimacy.
