A detailed etching by Gerard de Lairesse featuring the Roman goddess Bellona within an ornate, classical medallion.
This etching by Gerard de Lairesse depicts the Roman goddess of war, Bellona, presented within a circular medallion. The composition is characteristic of the artist's work, which often drew upon classical themes and decorative motifs popular in the Dutch Golden Age. Bellona is shown in profile, wearing a plumed helmet and scale armour, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. The medallion itself is framed by an ornate border of acanthus leaves and radiating spikes, a common decorative element in seventeenth-century printmaking.
Above the central medallion, two reclining figures are positioned amidst flowing drapery, adding a sense of movement to the upper portion of the print. The lower section features further scrolling foliage, which balances the composition and provides a sense of symmetry. De Lairesse employs a variety of hatching techniques to create depth and texture, particularly in the shading of the helmet and the metallic sheen of the armour. The contrast between the fine lines of the figures and the bolder, more structural lines of the frame demonstrates the technical proficiency associated with his printmaking practice.
Gerard de Lairesse was a significant figure in the later seventeenth century, known for his theoretical writings on art as well as his paintings and etchings. His work often reflects the influence of French classicism, which he helped to introduce to the Dutch Republic. This print serves as an example of his ability to integrate mythological subjects with decorative design, a skill that made his work popular for various applications, including book illustrations and ornamental patterns. The print is executed with a clear focus on form and classical proportion, adhering to the aesthetic standards of the period.
