A meticulous 1602 engraving by Johannes Wierix, replicating Albrecht Dürer's iconic allegorical study of Melancholy.
This engraving by Johannes Wierix is a precise copy of Albrecht Dürer's famous 1514 masterwork. Wierix, a highly skilled Flemish engraver, produced this version in 1602, demonstrating his technical mastery of the burin. The composition features a winged personification of Melancholy, seated in a state of deep contemplation. She is surrounded by various tools of geometry and architecture, including a sphere, a polyhedron, a saw, and a plane. A small putto sits upon a millstone nearby, scribbling on a tablet.
The scene is dense with symbolic objects: an hourglass, a bell, and a magic square hang on the wall, while a ladder leans against the structure. In the background, a comet streaks across the sky above a distant sea. Wierix captures the atmospheric quality of the original, using fine cross-hatching to define the textures of the stone, the fabric of the figure's robes, and the play of light across the scene. The work reflects the intellectual climate of the period, where the temperament of melancholy was associated with both creative genius and profound sadness. By replicating Dürer's composition, Wierix participated in the tradition of disseminating Northern Renaissance imagery to a wider audience of collectors and scholars. The print remains a study in precision, showcasing the ability of the engraver to translate complex tonal values into a system of lines. It offers a window into the artistic practices of the early seventeenth century, where the reproduction of earlier masterpieces was a standard method for refining one's own craft and preserving the visual language of the past.
