A detailed etching by Johannes Jelgerhuis depicting the actress Mevrouw Sardet in her role as Josabeth from the play Athalie.
This etching by Johannes Jelgerhuis depicts the actress Mevrouw Sardet in her performance as Josabeth, a character from Jean Racine's tragedy Athalie. Jelgerhuis, himself a prominent actor and painter, possessed a unique perspective on the theatre of his time. His work documents the costumes, gestures, and stage presence of early nineteenth-century Dutch performers with precision.
The composition focuses on the figure of Sardet, who stands in a theatrical pose with one arm extended. She wears a classical-style gown adorned with decorative borders and a veil, reflecting the period's fascination with historical costume design. The artist employs a delicate, linear technique, typical of the etching medium, to define the folds of the fabric and the subtle expression on the actress's face. The inscription in the upper right corner identifies the subject and the play, providing context for the performance.
Jelgerhuis was active in the Amsterdam theatre scene, and his drawings and prints serve as a record of the visual culture of the stage during the early 1800s. His approach is observational, capturing the specific mannerisms and attire that defined the characterisation of Josabeth. The print is characterised by its clean lines and restrained use of shading, which directs the viewer's attention to the costume and the dramatic stance of the actress. This piece offers a glimpse into the history of European theatre, documenting the intersection of performance art and visual illustration. The work is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its value as a historical document of Dutch theatrical life.
