A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Gerard de Jode, depicting the allegorical representation of middle age under the influence of the planet Mars.
This engraving by Gerard de Jode, a prominent Dutch cartographer and printmaker of the sixteenth century, belongs to a series exploring the seven ages of man and their corresponding planetary influences. The composition depicts the stage of middle age, governed by the martial energy of the planet Mars.
In the upper register, the god Mars appears amidst clouds, surrounded by an array of weaponry, symbolising the aggressive and active nature associated with this period of life. Below, a man in full armour stands as the earthly representative of this influence, gesturing towards a woman who holds a set of scales. This figure represents Discretio, or discretion, a necessary virtue for balancing the volatile energy of Mars during one's prime years. The background features a detailed military encampment, reinforcing the theme of conflict and strategic management.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century Flemish and Dutch printmaking. De Jode employs varied line weights to define the textures of metal armour, the soft folds of drapery, and the atmospheric quality of the clouds. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a moralising context, typical of the period, which sought to link human development with celestial movements.
This print offers a window into the intellectual climate of the Renaissance, where classical mythology and astrological concepts were integrated into daily life and moral philosophy. The work is a fine example of the narrative print tradition, where complex allegorical themes were translated into accessible visual forms for a learned audience. Its balanced composition and attention to detail reflect the high standards of the Antwerp print workshops, which were central to the dissemination of visual culture across Europe during this era.
