A detailed triptych by Rogier van der Weyden depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, rendered in the Early Netherlandish style.
The Miraflores Altarpiece is a triptych attributed to Rogier van der Weyden, a master of the Early Netherlandish school. This work depicts three scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary: the Nativity, the Lamentation, and the Appearance of Christ to his Mother. Each panel is framed within a painted architectural arch, which creates a sense of depth and physical presence for the figures within. The artist employs a precise, observational style, capturing the textures of heavy fabrics, the delicate features of the faces, and the subtle play of light across the interior spaces. Van der Weyden uses a specific colour palette to guide the viewer through the narrative. The recurring use of deep reds and blues provides a visual link between the panels, while the transition from the domestic interior of the Nativity to the expansive, distant horizon in the central Lamentation demonstrates his skill in spatial composition. The figures are rendered with a focus on emotional gravity, particularly in the central panel where the physical weight of the body of Christ is supported by the surrounding figures. The architectural elements, decorated with small sculptural reliefs, add a layer of detail that reflects the Gothic aesthetic of the period. This triptych is a primary example of the devotional art produced in the Burgundian Netherlands during the mid-fifteenth century, demonstrating the technical mastery of oil paint that allowed for such fine detail and luminosity.
