A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert, capturing a serene river scene illuminated by moonlight.
This print, titled Moonlight, is a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by the Dutch engraver Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert. Working during the seventeenth century, Bolswert was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of printmaking. This work demonstrates his skill in using varied line weights and cross-hatching to suggest the specific quality of nocturnal light.
The composition features a quiet river scene under a night sky. A full moon hangs above the horizon, casting a distinct reflection upon the water. The artist uses dense, rhythmic lines to define the silhouettes of the trees and the texture of the grassy bank where a lone horse grazes. The sky is rendered with delicate strokes to represent the stars and the soft glow surrounding the moon. The contrast between the dark, shadowed foreground and the luminous water creates a sense of depth and atmospheric stillness.
Bolswert often collaborated with contemporary painters, and this work reflects the interest in atmospheric effects that occupied many artists of the Dutch Golden Age. The print relies on the interplay of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro, to guide the viewer's eye across the scene. The precision of the engraving allows for a high degree of detail, from the individual leaves on the trees to the ripples on the river surface. It is a quiet, contemplative image that captures a specific moment of natural observation, typical of the period's focus on the rural environment.
