A traditional Japanese Bunjinga hanging scroll by Yokoi Kinkoku, depicting travellers on the path to Mount Emei through expressive ink and light colour.
Yokoi Kinkoku, a Japanese painter and monk, produced this hanging scroll depicting the legendary Mount Emei. The work belongs to the Bunjinga tradition, which drew inspiration from Chinese literati painting. Kinkoku employs a personal, expressive brushwork style that departs from the rigid academic standards of his contemporaries. The composition organises the mountain peaks into a vertical sequence, guiding the eye from the foreground path where travellers journey on horseback, upward toward the secluded temple structures nestled in the crags.
The ink wash technique provides a sense of atmospheric depth, with lighter tones suggesting mist and distance, while darker, more defined strokes delineate the rock formations and vegetation. Kinkoku uses a restrained palette, applying light colour washes to the silk to suggest the subtle hues of the terrain. The inclusion of small figures adds a human element to the vast, imposing geography, a common motif in literati art that emphasises the small scale of humanity in relation to the natural world.
Kinkoku was known for his unconventional life as a wandering priest, and his artistic output often reflects this itinerant experience. His approach to the brush is fluid, prioritising the capture of the spirit of the location over strict topographical accuracy. The calligraphic inscriptions in the upper right corner provide context and poetic framing for the scene, integrating text and image in the traditional manner of the scholar-painter. This print captures the texture of the original silk and the delicate layering of ink, offering a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Edo-period literati. The work remains a representative example of Kinkoku's ability to blend traditional Chinese-influenced themes with his own distinct, rhythmic application of ink.
