Description
Mousa Broch in Shetland stands above a green coastal ledge, its tapering dark stone tower overlooking blue water and angular shore rocks under a pale and cloud-bright summer sky.
On the Shetland island of Mousa stands Scotland’s tallest and best-preserved Iron Age tower. Thought to date from about 300 BC, the broch survives to 13 metres. These roundhouses are distinctive to Scotland, and this example also appears in medieval Norse sagas.
The curved masonry of Mousa Broch rises left of centre, narrowing slightly towards its open top. A low grassy shore extends beneath the tower. In front, angular grey slabs lead down towards blue sea streaked with white foam. The water opens out to the right under soft clouds, while clear summer light distinguishes individual stone courses on the rounded walls.
