Description

A refined woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada featuring the kabuki actor Nakayama Nanshi II in a scene from A Tale of Valor at Iga Pass.

This woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada depicts the kabuki actor Nakayama Nanshi II in the role of Otani. It originates from the series A Tale of Valor at Iga Pass, a narrative work reflecting the popular theatrical culture of the Osaka region during the mid-nineteenth century. Hirosada was a prolific designer of kamigata-e, or prints produced in the Osaka and Kyoto areas, which often focused on the specific stylings of local kabuki performers.

The composition captures the actor in a moment of quiet intensity. The figure is positioned against a slatted wooden screen, with a pine branch extending from the upper left corner to provide a sense of place. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, soft yellows, and charcoal tones to define the actor's costume and the surrounding architecture. The lines are precise, characteristic of the refined woodblock techniques employed by Osaka artists of this period. The actor is wrapped in a pale yellow garment, which contrasts with the darker blue of the kimono, drawing the viewer's eye to the expressive posture and facial features.

Unlike the more theatrical, exaggerated poses found in Edo-style prints, this work exhibits a degree of naturalism in the actor's expression. The inclusion of the pine tree suggests an outdoor setting, perhaps a garden or a temple precinct, providing context for the dramatic narrative of the Iga Pass story. The print serves as a record of a specific performance, documenting the costume and characterisation favoured by Nakayama Nanshi II. The technical execution, from the subtle gradients in the background to the clean registration of the blocks, demonstrates the high standard of print production in the Osaka school. This piece offers a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Japanese urban public during the late Edo period, where the intersection of theatre and visual art remained a primary source of entertainment and cultural documentation.
