A refined seventeenth-century portrait etching of Nicolas de Neufville, Marquis de Villeroy, by the French master Jean Morin.
This portrait of Nicolas de Neufville, Marquis de Villeroy, is a fine example of the printmaking output of Jean Morin, a French artist active in Paris during the mid-seventeenth century. Morin is recognised for his mastery of combining etching with the burin, a technique that allowed for a distinct tonal range and textural variety in his portraiture. The subject is depicted within an octagonal frame, a common compositional device in the period that provides a sense of architectural depth to the print.
The sitter, a prominent military and political figure, wears the armour of his rank, rendered with precise attention to the play of light across the metal surfaces. His lace collar and flowing hair are executed with delicate, rhythmic lines that demonstrate Morin's technical control. The inscription surrounding the frame identifies the sitter and his titles, while the lower margin provides the publication details, noting that the print was sold in the Faubourg Saint-Germain. This work is based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne, whose influence is evident in the formal, dignified posture of the subject.
Morin often collaborated with contemporary painters to translate their canvases into prints, making their work accessible to a wider audience. This particular etching reflects the sober, refined aesthetic of the French Baroque. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and presence, capturing the character of the Marquis with clarity. As a piece of historical documentation, the print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the French aristocracy during the reign of Louis XIII and the early years of Louis XIV. It remains a representative specimen of the high standards of seventeenth-century French printmaking, valued for its technical precision and formal composition.
