A detailed lithograph by James Duffield Harding depicting a fallen larch tree and goats in a rugged, natural setting.
James Duffield Harding was a prominent British painter and lithographer, known for his technical mastery of drawing and his influence on nineteenth-century art education. This work, titled Old Larch, demonstrates his ability to capture the textures of the natural world through precise, controlled mark-making. The composition features a fallen tree, its skeletal branches extending across the foreground, while a small group of goats rests near the base of the trunk.
Harding utilised the lithographic medium to achieve a range of tonal values, from the delicate, fine lines defining the foliage to the heavier, darker strokes that ground the rocks and the animal figures. The scene reflects the Romantic interest in the untamed aspects of nature, focusing on the decay and rugged beauty of a mountain environment. The inclusion of the goats provides a sense of scale and life, contrasting with the stillness of the weathered timber.
As an educator, Harding published several instructional manuals on drawing, which popularised his methods for rendering trees and natural forms. His approach prioritised the observation of light and shadow, which is evident here in the way the forms emerge from the paper. The print retains the character of a direct study, capturing a specific moment in the wilderness with clarity and technical rigour. This piece is an example of his contribution to the development of lithography as a medium for artistic expression in Britain during the early Victorian period.
