A detailed study of the Maine woods by Neil Welliver, capturing the structural complexity of fallen timber and forest growth.
Neil Welliver is recognised for his large-scale depictions of the Maine woods, a subject he explored with rigorous attention to light and structure. In Old Windfall, the artist presents a dense forest floor littered with fallen timber, captured with a clarity that avoids sentimentality. Welliver often painted outdoors, working directly from his observations to translate the complex geometry of the woods into a series of deliberate, visible brushstrokes.
The composition is defined by the interplay between the verticality of the standing trees and the chaotic, horizontal sprawl of the decaying logs. Rather than focusing on a single subject, the eye is invited to traverse the entire surface, moving across the mossy textures and the dappled light filtering through the canopy. His palette relies on a specific range of greens, greys, and earthy browns, which he applied with a methodical approach to colour mixing. This technique allows for a sense of depth that remains grounded in the physical reality of the forest.
Welliver’s work departs from traditional romanticised depictions of nature. He treats the forest as a site of constant change, where growth and decay exist in a state of equilibrium. The fallen trees, or windfall, serve as the primary structural elements of the painting, creating a web of lines that guide the viewer through the undergrowth. By focusing on the specificities of the Maine wilderness, Welliver provides a direct encounter with the environment, stripped of artifice. This print captures the precise tonal shifts and the structural rigour that define his practice, offering a view into the quiet, persistent cycles of the natural world.
