A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, featuring elegant figures in patterned kimonos from his series on the poetess Ono no Komachi.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi belongs to the series Seven Elegant Episodes from the Life of the Poetess Ono no Komachi. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre during the late eighteenth century. His work is recognised for its elongated figures and refined aesthetic, which departed from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The composition depicts two women accompanied by a young attendant, set against a simplified rural backdrop. The figures wear kimonos adorned with varied geometric and floral patterns, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile design. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the artist's mature period. The background features a winding stream and distant hills, rendered with minimal detail to maintain focus on the central figures. The print employs a limited palette, relying on the interplay of line and negative space to define form and texture.
Ono no Komachi was a legendary ninth-century poetess, and this series reinterprets her life through the lens of the Edo period. By placing these figures in a contemporary setting, Eishi connects historical literary tradition with the fashion and social customs of his own time. The print reflects the cultural interest in bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, which dominated the print market in Edo. The work is a fine example of the technical skill involved in Japanese woodblock printing, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the final image. The balance between the decorative patterns of the clothing and the sparse environment creates a sense of calm and poise.
