A classic benizuri-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, capturing two kabuki actors in a scene from a popular 18th-century play.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts two kabuki actors, Onoe Kikugorō and Nakamura Kiyosaburō, in the roles of the tragic lovers Yaoya Oshichi and the page Kichisaburō. The work belongs to the benizuri-e category, a style of early colour printing that utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to the monochrome base. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre, often experimenting with printing techniques and composition.
The figures are rendered with elegant, flowing lines that define the folds of their elaborate kimono. The patterns on the garments, featuring floral motifs and geometric shapes, demonstrate the artist's attention to the fashion of the Edo period. Both actors hold musical instruments, specifically the shamisen, which were common props in theatrical performances of the time. The composition is balanced, with the two figures positioned in a gentle interaction that suggests the narrative tension of their stage roles. The use of negative space around the figures allows the viewer to focus on the details of their costumes and the subtle expressions on their faces.
Masanobu's approach to the yakusha-e, or actor print, helped establish conventions for portraying performers that would influence later artists. The print reflects the cultural climate of 18th-century Japan, where the theatre served as a primary source of entertainment and fashion inspiration. The muted tones of the print have softened over time, providing a sense of historical authenticity to the piece. This work offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the period, combining theatrical drama with the refined sensibilities of the Ukiyo-e school.
