Description

A dramatic oil painting by George Frederic Watts depicting the tragic moment Orpheus loses Eurydice to the underworld.

George Frederic Watts painted this version of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice during the late 1860s. The composition captures the moment Orpheus turns to look at his wife, causing her to slip back into the underworld. Watts focuses on the physical tension between the two figures, using a warm, earthy palette to define their forms against a dark, indistinct background. The muscularity of Orpheus contrasts with the limp, fading posture of Eurydice, creating a sense of tragic loss. Watts was known for his interest in allegorical subjects and his desire to convey universal human experiences through classical narratives. He often reworked his canvases over many years, resulting in a painterly, textured surface that prioritises emotional weight over precise anatomical detail. The lighting in this work is dramatic, drawing the eye to the point of contact between the two lovers. The background remains secondary, suggesting a liminal space between the living world and the realm of the dead. This painting is one of several versions Watts produced of the same subject. It demonstrates his characteristic approach to Victorian academic painting, where the narrative is secondary to the expression of mood and psychological state. The brushwork is loose and expressive, reflecting the artist's move away from the rigid finish of his earlier career. By stripping away extraneous detail, Watts forces the viewer to confront the central action of the myth, which is the irreversible nature of the mistake made by Orpheus. The work remains a primary example of his late nineteenth-century output, where he sought to elevate painting to a medium capable of exploring philosophical themes.
